York pair Margaret Whitehead and Christine Place retained the Beryl Bean over 55’s trophy by beating Poppleton’s Rosie Cantrell and Hilary Spencer.
Nine couples from various clubs and divisions of the Ladies League entered the event, competing in two groups. Dunnington duo Sue Sumner and Joyce Rhodes were undefeated so comfortably topped their group, but were defeated by the eventual winners in the first semifinal.
Bishopthorpe’s Andrene Watson and Kathryn Dickinson edged through their group stage, but went down 4-1 to Cantrell and Spencer in the other semi.
Finalists – L to R, Rosie Cantrell, Margaret Whitehead, Beryl Bean, Christine Place and Hilary Spencer.
This set up a final of division 1 regulars, which produced some great rallies involving all four players. Though the Popp pair battled hard, Whitehead and Place’s attacking play at the net ultimately proved too strong, resulting in a 4-1 victory and a second title for the York couple.
Tournament sponsor, Beryl Bean, expressed her thanks to hosts and organisers Poppleton, and to all the players that took part for providing some excellent matches.
