Castlegarth 2 continue to keep the pressure on Fulford at the top of division 3 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League. The Wetherby team had a comfortable 74-34 win at Tollerton. Leaders Fulford 2 had a tighter margin of victory, defeating Rowntree Park 56-52, captain Carolyn Taylor and Susan Scott taking 10 games in the final rubber to clinch the win. Appleton are still looking for their first victory; despite a 28 game haul from Marilyn Almgill and Chris Howat they were unable to overcome Cop 1, losing out 49-59. Elsewhere Wistow went down to a 48-60 defeat at Knaresborough.

David Lloyd 2 climbed to the top of division 4 after Bubwith’s match was postponed, they thrashed Boston Spa seconds 84-24, without losing a rubber. New Earswick were only able to field two couples for their match at Sutton, going down 81-27. Popp seconds had a closer encounter with Riccall, coming out as 56-52 winners.

Top played bottom in division 5 where leaders Wig 2 had a comfortable win over Knaresborough seconds. Heworth occupy second place after Helen Gray and Monika Harikatas racked up 27 games in their team’s win at Cawood. Bish 2 stay third after a convincing 72-36 victory over Wilberfoss 1.

The top two teams met in division 6, with David Lloyd thirds claiming the points in their 57-51 win over Fulford 3. Popp 3’s Elaine Baron and Helena Kendall were undefeated in their team’s 68-40 win over Dunnington, moving them up to third spot in the table.

Copmanthorpe 3 crushed Wilberfoss seconds 80-28 in division 7, Jane Jones and Juliette Weylon bagging 33 of Cop’s games. Bubwith 2 got the better of table toppers David Lloyd 4 with a 61-47 victory.

York seconds good run continued in division 1 with a 69-39 triumph over Bishopthorpe 1. Dunnington trounced David Lloyd’s first team 87-21 to remain second. York 1 look to be in control at the top however, after Louise Marshman and captain Kathryn Maude took 31 games to lead the team to a 77-31 victory at Pocklington.

Fulford 1 just held on to their unbeaten record in division 2, battling out a hard fought draw at Wigginton. Cliffe finally secured their first win of the campaign, Kelly Holmes and Emma Foster teaming up to claim 27 games in their victory over Pocklington seconds.

Poppleton continue to struggle in division 1 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League, going down 31-77 to York’s second team, who benefited from consistent scores from all three couples. Pocklington 1 had a resounding win at Starbeck, Rebecca Hill and Vic Bland only dropping 3 games in the 81-27 victory. Bishopthorpe suffered their first loss of the campaign against Dunnington, for whom Emma Loten and Sue Sumner were the top scorers. York 1 thrashed David Lloyd 87-21 to climb to their familiar position at the top of the table, Jill Le Pla and Sasha Taylor including a 12-0 in their final rubber for the Clifton Park club, who may now prove difficult to remove from the top slot.

Castlegarth 2 and Fulford 1 remain unbeaten at the top of division 2. Both recorded comprehensive wins over Dunnington seconds and Cliffe respectively, all three of the Wetherby club’s couples scoring 27 games. Wigginton 1 were hampered by injury in their match against Rufforth, losing out 63-45. Lorraine Peary and Lesley Bowling claimed 28 games to help Boston Spa to their first win of the season against Pocklington 2.

Wistow were only able to field 2 couples in their division 3 match at Rowntree Park, going down to an 81-27 defeat. Fulford seconds stay top after a hard fought win at Tollerton. Castlegarth 2 stay in touch after beating struggling Appleton, whilst Copmanthorpe defeated Knareborough.

Bubwith and David Lloyd 2 continue to battle it out at the top of division 4, Louise Smith and Anna Airaksinen taking 30 games in Bubwith’s demolition of Riccall. Boston Spa 2 remain in third place after overcoming Popp seconds 56-52. Ann Morley and Lucy Collier notched up 30 games to help Sutton defeat Dunnington thirds who are still looking for their first win.

Wig seconds lead the way in division 5; they remain undefeated after beating Cawood 60-48. Julia Sykes and Andrene Watson bagged 27 games to help Bish seconds defeat Cop 2; meanwhile Heworth overcame Knareborough 59-49.

Dunnington 4 finally got their season up and running in division 6 with a 62-46 victory at Appleton, captain Ann Murray and partner Jenny Rossington returning a 12-0 victory in the first rubber. Fulford 3 remain top however after a solid team performance saw them overcome Sheriff Hutton 72-36.

David Lloyd 4 continued their good start in division 7, Jean Leaver and Tina Miller teaming up to take 30 games in their 67-41 defeat of Wilberfoss 2.

DAVID LLOYD’S new fourth team secured a haul of 95 games out of a possible 108 in its first ever match in the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League – with two teenagers in its squad.

The team, which plays in the newly-formed division seven, was gifted 36 games to begin with after opposition Rufforth 2 only fielded two pairs at the home match on Saturday, May 7.

Thirteen-year-old Eva Pears was top scorer for the home side, only dropping three games with her partner Jean Leaver.

Mother-and-daughter pair Lesley Mizen and 17-year-old Georgina Mizen only lost six games out of the 24 they played.

Captain Adrianne Johnson and Julie Price completed the decisive win by securing 20 games.

Fulford 3’s good start to the season continued in the Fulford Ladies Invitation League; they hammered Dunnington’s fourth team 81-27 to remain top of division 6. Elsewhere, Sarah Frank and Christine Thomas bagged 29 games for Sheriff as they beat Stamford Bridge by the same score. David Lloyd 3 overcame Popp’s thirds 63-45 to remain unbeaten.

Wigginton 2 top division 5 after a 77-31 win over Wilberfoss, Helen Brown and Catherine Field claiming 30 of Wig’s games. Cop 2 and Heworth fought out the first draw of the campaign. Bish seconds recorded their first win with a comprehensive 82-26 defeat of Cawood.

A 25 game haul from Lisa Garland and Liz Taylor helped David Lloyd 2 edge past Riccall 55-53 in division 4. Bubwith remain at the top however after beating Sutton 62-46. Popp 2 climbed off the bottom of the table after victory over Dunnington, while New Earswick overcame Boston Spa.

Wistow maintained their 100% record in division 3, sisters Rachel and Sarah Huggins leading the way in their team’s 62-46 defeat of Tollerton. Fulford seconds produced a strong last round to overcome Copmanthorpe 56-52. Rowntree Park’s 59 – 49 win over Appleton leaves Roebuck struggling at the foot of the table, meanwhile Castlegarth 2 beat Knaresborough.

The top three teams in division 2 all logged comfortable wins. Castlegarth top the pile after beating Rufforth, Fulford 1 stay hot on their heels after victory at Boston Spa, which included a 30 game haul from Anna Baker and Jo Middleton. Wig 1 remain third after inflicting a heavy defeat on Cliffe, whilst Pock 2 scraped a 55-53 triumph over Dunnington seconds.

Bishopthorpe 1 and York 1 remain the only unbeaten teams in division 1, both recorded victories over Starbeck and Poppleton 1 respectively. Karen Retief and Sarah Dwyer teamed up to take 25 games in York 2’s narrow win at David Lloyd, whilst Dunnington  took the points in their 67-41 win over Pocklington.

Bubwith seconds top division 7 after defeating Cop 3 60-48, David Lloyd 4 trounced Rufforth seconds 95-13, though Rufforth could only field two couples.

Dunnington inflicted a crushing defeat on Starbeck in division 1 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League, Karen Mitchell and Alex Bolam bagging an impressive 35 of the team’s 93 game haul. David Lloyd continued their good start to the season with a 60-48 win at Poppleton, as did Bishopthorpe, beating Pocklington by the same score. York firsts had a comfortable win over their second team, Fiona Geldart and Louise Marshman taking 33 games for the defending Champions.

Top scorers in division 2 were Castlegarth’s Rachel Hill and Sue Jacklin who took 30 games in their team’s 62-46 win at Pocklington. Dunnington seconds recorded their first victory of the campaign, beating Cliffe 72-36, whilst Fulford produced a good team performance to sneak a 55-53 win against Rufforth.

Knaresborough got their season up and running in division 3 with a 70-38 win at Tollerton. Castlegarth 2 captain Rachel Butterworth and partner Fiona Chantrey claimed 32 games to lead their team to a 73-35 win against Rowntree Park. Fulford seconds and Wistow top the table however, after victories over Appleton and Cop 1 respectively.

Bubwith look to be settling well in division 4, Liz Bramley and Gill McGrory top scoring in the team’s 63-45 victory over New Earswick. David Lloyd 2 stay with them at the top after overcoming Poppleton seconds 69-39. Riccall had their first win of the season at Dunnington, whilst Boston Spa 2 beat Sutton.

Anne Gray and Christine Viz scored 26 games in Heworth’s division 5 victory over Bishopthorpe seconds; meanwhile Wig 2’s good start continued with a 62-46 triumph against Cop 2. Wilberfoss notched up their first win since being promoted with a 65-43 score against Knareborough 2.

Consistent scoring from all three couples saw Fulford 3 inflict a 70-38 defeat over Appleton’s seconds in division 6. David Lloyd 3 had a 68-40 win at Sheriff Hutton, aided by a 26 game haul from Miranda Stephenson and Phillipa Ashley. Elsewhere Popp thirds overcame Stamford Bridge in a rain affected match.

                                                            BISH BASH POPP 

Division 2 saw the closest match of the opening weekend of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis league. Rufforth just edged past Boston Spa by a couple of games, helped by a 27 game haul from Sue Yoward and Christine Place. Newly promoted Wigginton 1  beat Dunnington 2, whilst Castlegarth and Fulford 1 overcame Cliffe and Pocklington 2 respectively.

The two teams returning to division 1, Bishopthorpe and David Lloyd 1, top the table after resounding wins over Poppleton and Starbeck. Bish’s Laura Rhodes and Ellie Page (pictured), achieved perfection in scoring 36 games. Defending champions York 1, won the battle of the heavy-weights in defeating Dunnington 1, meanwhile Pocklington overcame York 2, Rebecca Hill and Victoria Bland top scoring for Pock.

Fulford 2 are the first leaders of division 3 after a 72-36 win against Knaresborough. Tollerton also made a good start recording a 63-45 victory over Appleton.

Boston Spa’s Margaret Lindley and Anne Milne bagged 30 games in their team’s 71-37 triumph over Riccall in division 4,  Bubwith 1 started with a win against Poppleton 2.

In division 5, Cawood enjoyed a comfortable victory over newly promoted Wilberfoss 1, elsewhere Wigginton 2 beat Heworth 67-41. Despite Jeanette Bowden and Mary Riley claiming 29 games for Knaresborough 2, it wasn’t enough to overcome Copmanthorpe 2, their team losing out 48-60.

Appleton and Fulford 3 top division 6 after both recorded 67-41 victories against Stamford Bridge and Poppleton 3 respectively. Elsewhere, Sheriff beat Dunnington 4 by  56 games to 52.

League newcomers Rufforth 2 began their campaign in division 7 with a win against Copmanthorpe 3, whilst the other league debutants, Wilberfoss 2, went down 45-63 to Bubwith 2.
