DIVISION 4 HIGH-FLYERS – BUBWITH 1

York 1 breezed past their only likely real title challengers in division 1 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League. They beat second placed Dunnington 70-38, led by the trusted partnership of Lou Lister and Wendy Stirke. Starbeck enjoyed their first victory of the season over David Lloyd, aided by a 29 game haul from Lisa Jacob and Becci Jones. The weekend’s top performers were Rebecca Turnbull and Clare Morrell who scored a highly impressive 35 games in Poppleton’s win against Bishopthorpe. Pocklington got the better of York seconds to come out 59-49 winners.

The top two teams in division 2 both recorded wins to open up a significant gap between themselves and the chasing pack. Leaders Fulford beat Pocklington, and Castlegarth overcame Cliffe 73-35. Lorainne Peary and Lesley Bowling scored 29 games in Boston Spa’s win over Rufforth, while Wigginton defeated Dunnington seconds 73-35.

Castlegarth 2 are the new leaders of division 3 after edging past Wistow 55-53. There were surprise defeats for former leaders Fulford at Knaresborough and Copmanthorpe, who went down 47-61 at Rowntree Park. Appleton climbed off the bottom of the table with a 61-47 win against Tollerton.

Liz Bramley and Gill McCrory scored 31 games in Bubwith’s win at Popp to ensure they remain hot on the heels of division 4 leaders David Lloyd, who were victorious against Sutton. New Earswick remain third after a 69-39 win at bottom club Dunnington.

Heworth climbed to third place in division 5 after scraping a 55-53 win at leaders Wigginton. Knaresborough won their first point of the campaign and were indebted to Mary Riley and Paddy MacJannette, who scored 28 games in their draw with Cop seconds. Wilberfoss defeated Cawood to become one of three teams on 6 points, all hovering above bottom placed Knaresborough.

Fulford 3 were unable to take advantage of division 6 leaders David Lloyd’s free week, as they went down 44-64 to Poppleton. Kath Temple and Pauline Connelly included a 12-0 in Appleton’s 66-42 victory at struggling Stamford Bridge.  Elsewhere Sheriff defeated Dunnington 63-45.

Bubwith remain top of division 7 after a comprehensive 72-36 triumph over Wilberfoss. Rufforth fielded a couple of league debutants, but they were unable prevent their team going down 37-71 to Copmanthorpe.

Poppleton finally got their season up and running in division 1 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis league. They beat Pocklington, largely thanks to Rebecca Turnbull, returning from injury, teaming up with Mum Belinda to win 32 of the team’s 58 game total. Despite Anne Jackson and Siobhan Gilfillan opening with a 12-0 in their first rubber against Dunnington, York 2 couldn’t close their match out, eventually going down 50-58 to the second place team. Charlotte Worsman and Elaine Hilton won 19 games in David Lloyd’s 55-53 victory over Bish, they were capably supported by their team mates, both other couples claiming 18 games.  York 1 march on at the top though, racking up their games difference by thrashing Starbeck 80-28.

Fulford 1 remain top of division 2 after captain Jill McCreedy and Ruth Painter scored a vital 10 games in their final rubber to secure victory over promotion rivals Castlegarth. Suzie Booth and Joyce Rhodes were in form for Dunnington seconds as they beat Boston Spa 62-46, while Cliffe and Rufforth fought out a draw. Wig’s match against Pocklington fell victim to the weather.

Division 3 leaders Fulford 2 went down to their first defeat of the season at Wistow. Cop 1 continue to press at the top after downing Castlegarth 60-48. Appleton enjoyed their first win of the campaign, Chris Howat and Fiona Vickery taking 26 games in their victory against Knaresborough.

The top two teams in division 4 both had convincing wins; Bubwith against Boston Spa seconds and David Lloyd 2 at Dunnington, Fiona White and Dinah Burke taking 30 games for DL.  New Earswick remain third after a 58-50 win against Popp 2. Riccall’s match against Sutton was rained off.

Bish 2 traded places with division 5 leaders Wigginton after beating them 64-44. Knaresborough seconds continue to struggle, going down 34-74 to Cawood, for whom Lorraine Bishop and Lorna Pope scored 26 games. Elsewhere, Cop 2 edged past Wilberfoss 57-51.

David Lloyd 3 remain top of division 6 after Joy Craig and Tina Miller bagged 27 games in their victory over Appleton. Popp 3 won their mid table clash against Sheriff by a couple of games, whilst Ann Murray and Heather Hogg included a 12-0 in Dunnington’s triumph at Stamford Bridge.

Cop 3 remain in second spot in division 7 after beating David Lloyd’s fourth team 56-52. Bottom club Rufforth conceded to leaders Bubwith.

The two unbeaten teams met in division 4 as matches resumed in the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League, with Bubwith coming out as 68-40 victors against David Lloyd seconds. New Earswick crept up to third place after a double header against Riccall, one of which they won comfortably, the other being a much closer affair, Nicky Georgiou and Theresa Roberts Hardy bagging 23 of Earswick’s 55 game total. Dunnington 3 are still in search of their first points after going down to a good team performance from Boston Spa seconds, for whom all three couples scored over 20 games. Elsewhere Sutton had a 56-52 win at Popp seconds.

Bish 2 made up ground on division 5 leaders Wigginton, who had a free week, with a 61-47 win at bottom club Knaresborough. Gerry Screeton teamed up with Nicola Ramshaw to claim 24 games for Wilberfoss in their tight victory over Heworth.

The top two teams in division 6 both had comfortable victories, David Lloyd 3 beat Dunnington and Fulford 3 hammered Stamford Bridge 87-21, aided by a 31 game haul from Maggie Middleton and Charlotte O’ Shea. Popp 3 beat Appleton to move into third place.

Karen Pratt and Sarah Cormer took all 12 games in their final rubber to ease Wilberfoss seconds to a 58-50 victory against Rufforth in division 7, whilst Cop 3 beat leaders Bubwith to move into second place.

In division 1, Dunnington’s philosophy of pairing youth and experience paid off handsomely as all three couples recorded good scores against struggling Poppleton, Karen Mitchell and Rosie Todd only dropping a couple of games to top score. Margaret Whitehead and Sarah Dwyer clinched 31 games in York seconds heavy defeat of bottom club Starbeck, whilst Pocklington overcame David Lloyd 63-45 to remain mid table. York 1 kept their 100% record intact with a straight forward 75-33 win at Bishopthorpe to ensure they remain top of the table.

Castlegarth crushed a below strength Wig team 83-25 to keep the pressure on at the top of division 2, Lucy Wright and Charlotte Todd including a 12-0 in their 30 game score. Rufforth move up to third place after a 59-49 victory over Pock seconds.  Fulford 1 had a convincing win over Dunnington to remain top, a point ahead of Castlegarth who they face next. Cliffe were unable to field a team to play at Boston Spa and so prop up the table.

The top two teams in division 3 couldn’t be separated as Fulford 2 and Castlegarth seconds battled out a draw, Garth’s third couple hampered by injury clinging on for a vital 3 games in the last rubber. Sarah Atkinson and Laura Simpson claimed 30 games for Cop 1 as their good run continued with a 73-35 triumph at Tollerton.
