Sometimes it’s more about the Cake than the Winning!
Players from Cliffe & Bubwith enjoy lunch in the sunshine after their match
Wiggington remain top of division 5 of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League despite dropping points in their home match against Riccall, Michelle Hall and Sophie Marshman scoring 24 games to snatch a draw for the visitors. Fulford 3 continue to impress as the only unbeaten team in the division, Georgie Stephenson and Sarah Richards finished undefeated in their 57-51 win at Wilberfoss. Cawood notched up their first points of the season, Lesley Savage and Sarah Lee Neeson taking 11 games in their final rubber to see their team home to a 56-52 win against David Lloyd 3.
The York machine rumbles on at the top of division 1, this week’s star performers being Jill Le Pla and Fay Chapman, who racked up 32 games in their team’s demolition of Bishopthorpe. Pocklington look to be establishing themselves as a very handy top half team, all three of their couples making significant contributions in their comfortable victory over York seconds. Jo Middleton and Anna Baker took 33 games for Fulford as they cruised to an emphatic 87-21 win against bottom team Poppleton.
Rufforth grabbed valuable points in their mid-table division 2 clash with Dunnington, captain Kate Lewis and partner Christine Edmond led from the front winning all their rubbers in the 58-50 victory. Diane Lang and Becci Jones bagged 26 games for Starbeck in their triumph over Boston Spa, while David Lloyd overcame Wigginton 59-49.
David Lloyd remain top of division 3 despite going down 46 – 62 at Knaresborough. Jo Earl and Valerie Bell were in form for Cliffe as they celebrated their first win of the campaign against local rivals Bubwith. Copmanthorpe stay in touch with the leaders, Rhian Scott and Sarah Atkinson bagging 26 games, in their victory over Pocklington. Rowntree Park were again only able to field two couples so crashed to a heavy defeat at Fulford.
Lynn Kent and Ann Hopwood amassed 24 games in Copmanthorpe’s comfortable victory over Bubwith in division 6, so they remain top. Poppleton 3 are hard on their heels after scores of twenty plus from all three couples enabled them to see off bottom placed Dunnington.
Although Natalie Muir and Kim Lees only dropped a couple of games for Stamford Bridge, it wasn’t enough to inspire their team to victory over division 7 leaders Rufforth. York 3 remain unbeaten after inflicting a heavy defeat on a depleted Wilberfoss side.
The League was saddened to hear about the death of Jean Cross last week. Jean was one of the founder members of the FLITL and was a talented player and active member at Fulford TC for many years. Thoughts and sympathies are with her family at this difficult time.
