Press Report – Week 9

Arina Fjordova and Francesca Bakes achieved perfection in winning all 36 of their games in Knaresborough’s division 3 annihilation of Boston Spa; this move `boro into equal second place along with Wistow, for whom Rachel Huggins and Helen Carbutt netted 29 games in their 60-48 victory over Bishopthorpe. Fulford remain in contention despite falling to a 59-49 defeat at Copmanthorpe.

Mel Duncan and Cordie Cavill were unbeaten for Pocklington as they cruised to a comfortable victory over York seconds and climbed to second place in the division 1 table. David Lloyd bagged a valuable win over mid table rivals Castlegarth, whilst Bishopthorpe logged their first points of the campaign against a depleted Wigginton side.

Division 2 leaders Fulford recorded a convincing 73-35 win over Pocklington, captain Jill McCreedy and Ruth Painter finishing undefeated. Kate Lewis and Christine Edmond’s 26 game haul helped Rufforth ease past Boston Spa and maintain second place. Di Lang and Sophie Cousins were in form for Starbeck as they overcame David Lloyd 66-42.

In division 4 Tollerton and Wigginton 2 remain in the chasing pack after logging comfortable wins over Sutton and Appleton respectively.

Wilberfoss remain in the driving seat in division 5, all of their couples making scores of twenty plus in their 73-35 win at Poppleton. Miranda Stephenson and Philippa Ashley won 27 games to help David Lloyd continue their promotion bid as they cruised to a 75-33 victory at Fulford.

Stamford Bridge are on a charge at the top of division 7, Karen Anderson and Natalie Muir only dropping one game as they battered Rufforth 82-26. Elsewhere, Andrea Webster and Katy Weld impressed with 23 games as Wilberfoss defeated Copmanthorpe 60-48.

York continued their unbeaten run at the top of division 1 of the FLITL, new recruit Jo Middleton looks to be forming a useful partnership with Fay Chapman for the Clifton Park side as they demolished Pocklington 82-26. Despite netting 27 games, Ellie Page and Laura Rhodes still couldn’t lead Bishopthorpe to a first win, as they went down 55-53 to Dunnington, for whom Joyce Rhodes and Karen Mitchell’s 12-0 in the last rubber proved vital. Wigginton suffered a 75-33 defeat to David Lloyd so the teams trade mid table places.

Lorraine Peary and Lucy Kidd bagged 24 games for Boston Spa in their victory over Pocklington as they climbed to second place in division 2. David Lloyd are chasing hard, Frances Mutter and Chris Twigge finishing unbeaten in their win over Castlegarth. Leaders Fulford overcame a depleted Starbeck side to remain top, though were pushed hard as Helen Halsall and Lisa Jacob bagged 29 games for the Harrogate side.

Dunnington march on at the top of division 3, easing past Bishopthorpe 68-40. Fulford’s good run was checked as they lost to Wistow, whilst Bubwith just missed out on their first points falling to a 56-52 defeat against Knaresborough. Julie Barnes and Kate Pirie’s 26 games were invaluable for Boston Spa as they scraped a 57-51 win over Copmanthorpe.

Cliffe got the better of Heworth in their top of the table division 4 clash, Liz Boville and Mary Pepper winning 23 games in their 57-51 victory. At the wrong end of the table, Lucy Hodsdon and Anna Morley were unbeaten for Sutton as they overcame Rowntree Park. Elsewhere there were wins for Riccall and Appleton over Wigginton and Tollerton respectively.

Wilberfoss lead division 5 and look in form as they pasted Copmanthorpe 80-28, Chris Oldfield and Georgina Pratt contributing 29 games. Similar scores from all three couples saw Poppleton 2 see off their third team 62-46 and climb up to second place.

Dunnington maintained their 100% record at the top of division 3 of the Fulford Ladies Invitational Tennis League, by defeating Wistow 63-45. Fulford 2 are maintaining the pressure on them, as captain Carolyn Taylor paired up with Linda Irving to lead them to a 66-42 win against Knaresborough. Jackie Mason and Krysia Clark’s 15 games proved vital as Bishopthorpe scraped past high flying neighbours Copmanthorpe by the tightest of margins. Meanwhile, Ann McCreesh and Sandy Clough top scored for Boston Spa as they saw off Bubwith 70-38.

Stela Penciu and Nejla Aslan netted 31 games to help David Lloyd to a convincing victory over Bishopthorpe in division 1. Charlotte Mitchell and Sue Sumner were unbeaten for Dunnington as they overcame Pocklington 63-45, leaving both teams level on points behinds leaders York 1 who annihilated Castlegarth 79-29. In a closer encounter, Wigginton overcame York seconds 58-50.

In the top of the table clash in division 2, Fulford came out comfortable winners against Rufforth so leap frog them to lead the pile. Pocklington gained precious points as they beat David Lloyd 2, whilst Helen Halsall and Tijane Metcalfe racked up 24 games in Starbeck’s 58-50 defeat of local rivals Castlegarth.

Division 4 leaders, Cliffe, crashed to a heavy defeat at Wigginton for whom debutant Kerry Rafton and Yvonne Petruso scored 29 games. Helen Gray and Hester De Groot won all their rounds to lead Heworth to a 60-48 victory over bottom placed Sutton. Riccall were triumphant in their mid-table clash with Appleton, Cynthia and Steff Jackson leading the way with 33 games.

The weekends star performers were Gerry Screeton and Caz Mackender, who only dropped one game as division 5 leaders Wilberfoss trounced New Earswick 79-29.  Consistent scores from all three Copmanthorpe couples facilitated their 65-43 defeat of Poppleton.

Dunnington 3 now have a four-point cushion at the top of division 6; Judith Peake-Vout and Margaret Jenkins bagged 29 games as they crushed David Lloyd 84-24. Elsewhere, Cawood edged past Knaresborough to climb into second place.

Pauline Connolly and Julia Campbell netted 10 games in each of their rubbers for Appleton as they overcame Rufforth 70-38 in division 7. Copmanthorpe were only able to field two couples so went down heavily to leaders Stamford Bridge.
