Beryl Bean, centre, presents Fulford’s Anna Baker, left, and Jill McCreedy with the Rosebowl trophy
This year’s Beryl Bean tournament saw ten couples from various clubs participate as Wigginton once again hosted this popular event.
Couples were split into two groups with the top two from each going into the semifinals. Group highlights included Tollerton pair Sandra Jennings and Ed Hope’s battle with their team mates, Teena Gallon and Pippa Bailey, and Bishopthorpe’s Andrene Watson and Georgina McKenzie logging a 7-0 win.
The semi finals saw Poppleton’s Hilary Spencer and Rosie Cantrell go down to Fulford’s Jill McCreedy and Anna Baker and Dunnington’s Sue Sumner and Joyce Rhodes defeat Wigginton’s Denise Crane and her sister Angie Sleightholm.
In a close fought final, which included some long rallies and tactical match play, McCreedy and Baker eventually emerged as winners to take the crown for the first time.
Tournament sponsor, Beryl Bean, thanked Wigginton for running a sociable and competitive event and praised all players that took part in some high-quality matches.
